When Favorite Characters Help Start Conversations

If you’ve ever watched the same movie ten times, read the same book every night, or heard your child talk about one character all day, you know how much children can love their favorite stories. They may even dress up like a superhero, pretend to be a brave princess, or act out a scene from a favorite show. While these moments may seem like simple fun, they can also open the door to meaningful conversations.

Favorite characters give kids a safe and familiar way to explore the world around them. Through stories and pretend play, children can think about feelings, friendships, fears, and choices. Caregivers can join in by asking a simple question, sharing a thought, or just listening.

The goal is not to turn every movie, book, or playtime into a lesson. It is to notice when a small moment offers a chance to connect.

Start With What Your Child Already Loves

Young children often find it easier to talk about a character than to talk about themselves. Asking, “How did you feel when your friend took your toy?” may feel too hard or too personal. But asking, “How do you think Bluey felt when she had to share?” may be much easier. A favorite character gives children a little space to think about feelings and situations without feeling put on the spot.

As you watch a show, read a book, or play together, you can try asking open questions like:

• “What do you think will happen next?”
• “How do you think that character feels?”
• “What would you do if you were there?”
• “Why do you think they made that choice?”

You do not need to ask all these questions at once. One question is often enough. You can also wait for your child to bring up a character or story on their own. Sometimes, the best conversation starts when you follow your child's lead.

Talk About Choices Without Judgment

Stories are full of choices. Characters help friends, break rules, tell lies, share toys, or make a mess. These moments can help children think about what happens when people make different choices.

For example, if a character grabs a toy instead of asking to play, you might say, “I wonder what else they could have done.” Your child might suggest asking nicely, waiting for a turn, or finding another toy.

Try to keep the conversation curious instead of making it feel like a test. For example, rather than asking, “Was that bad?” you could ask, “What happened after they made that choice?” or “How could they fix it?”

This helps children see that choices have results and that there may be more than one way to handle a problem. It also gives them room to think for themselves. You do not have to explain the right answer every time. Sometimes, letting your child share their own ideas helps them learn even more.

Use Characters to Talk About Feelings

Big feelings can be hard for children to name. They may feel angry, worried, jealous, and/or sad without knowing the words to explain what is happening.

Characters can help children learn those words. For example, you might say, “He looks disappointed because his plan didn’t work,” or “She seems a bit nervous about trying something new.” Then, give your child time to respond. You could also ask, “Have you ever felt that way?” But try not to push if your child does not want to answer. They may simply want to talk about the story.

You can also use pretend play to explore feelings. For example, if your child is playing with dolls, action figures, or stuffed animals, you might have one toy say, “I feel left out. Can I play, too?” Your child may decide how the story goes next. They might help the toy, ignore it, or come up with a new idea. Follow their lead and try to keep the play relaxed.

Even though these moments happen in pretend play or make-believe stories, over time, they can help children notice feelings in themselves and others.

Make Room for Fears and Courage

A favorite character can help children explore things that feel scary. Maybe a character is afraid of the dark, nervous about going to school, or unsure about trying something new.

You might say, “That was a big thing for them to try. What do you think helped them?” Your child might say the character felt brave because a friend helped, a trusted adult offered support, or they chose to try something new. These talks can help children learn that courage does not mean never feeling afraid. It can mean trying something while still feeling nervous, asking for help, or taking one small step.

If your child shares a fear of their own, make sure to listen before offering advice. You can validate what they feel by saying something like, “That sounds scary,” or “I can understand why you might feel worried.”

You do not need to compare your child’s fear to the character’s experience or tell them they should be brave. Every child and situation is different, and what helps one character may not be what your child needs. Let the story be a starting point, then make space for whatever your child is feeling.

Help Children Learn From Mistakes

Many beloved characters make mistakes. They may hurt someone's feelings, not follow a rule, or try something that goes wrong. These moments can help children learn that mistakes are part of growing up. What matters is what happens next.

If a character says something unkind to a friend, you might ask, “What could they do next?” Your child might suggest apologizing, checking in with their friend, or thinking about what they could do differently next time.

You can also share your own mistakes. For example, you might say, “I got frustrated and spoke in a way that wasn’t very nice. I’m sorry. Next time, I’ll try to take a breath before I respond.” This shows children that grown-ups make mistakes, too. They can learn to take responsibility, make amends, and try a different approach next time without feeling that one wrong choice makes them a bad person.

Explore Relationships Through Stories

Children’s stories show all kinds of interactions, from friendships and family relationships to meeting new people, working through disagreements, and getting to know people who are different from them. These moments can help children think about things like kindness, fairness, trust, and caring for others. They can also show children that people may look different, enjoy different things, or do things in different ways—and that those differences are worth celebrating.

When characters disagree, you might ask, “How could they work this out?” When someone helps a friend, you could say, “That was a kind thing for them to do.” You can also point out when characters appreciate each other's differences. For example, you might say, “They have different ideas, but they seem to still enjoy playing together.”

You can also notice moments when a character needs help or sets a boundary. For example, a character might say no to a game they do not enjoy. This can help children understand that people can care about each other while still having their own needs. It can also help children learn that being a good friend does not mean everyone has to like the same things or always agree.

Try to let these conversations happen naturally and follow your child’s lead. You don’t need to explain everything or have all the answers. Sometimes, a few thoughtful words at the right moment are enough.

Remember: Play Comes First

It can be tempting to turn every story into a chance to teach something. But children also need time to enjoy their favorite characters without being asked questions or told what to learn.

Sometimes, simply let the movie play. Read the book without stopping. Play with their favorite toys, sing the silly song, or make up new adventures for their favorite characters. Children need time to enjoy these moments without being asked questions or encouraged to learn a lesson. The best conversations often happen naturally, when children feel safe, relaxed, and free to share their thoughts.

Your child’s favorite character does not need to be a perfect role model or teach a clear lesson in every story. The character gives you a familiar starting point for exploring feelings, choices, and relationships when the moment feels right.

A question during a read-aloud, a comment during pretend play, or a relaxed chat after a show or movie can help your child make sense of the world. You do not need to have all the answers or turn every moment into a lesson. Sometimes, simply listening to what your child thinks and feels is enough.
